How long have you been a member of NBC and Sweet Adelines? How did you come to join?

It’s been around ten months. My father has been encouraging me to sing for over 30 years because he thought I had a good ear & voice for music. Now that my body is getting too “old” for all the sports I once loved, I needed to do something new & challenging…for me. I asked my Barbershop Director/father who I should contact to start singing. Without delay he emailed the details for NBC as he’s known & respected Linda for the past 20 years. My father finally got his wish & I have discovered a whole new world of singing!

What were you doing 20 years ago when the chorus began?

Working at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital as an Emergency Clinical Nurse Specialist, playing competitive basketball, netball & rock climbing.

What do you most enjoy about the chorus?

The positive, encouraging & welcoming atmosphere from all NBC members.
I go home every Monday night with a feeling of achievement – I never thought I would or could do something new like singing, having no personal musical background but I love a challenge. I enjoy the commitment & effort I need to put in to be part of a wonderful team.

What have you done in Sweet Adelines that has taken you out of your comfort zone?

1. I joined a chorus!
2. I sang in a small ensemble which helped me build some confidence.
3. I sang in my first concert after being a member for 3 months & learnt 6 songs…AND passed…AND with choreo!

What have you done in the chorus that has surprised your family and friends?

1. I joined the chorus! (I CAN sing!)
2. I performed at a concert…my parents were very proud!
3. My commitment to learn more about 4-part harmony & the time I put in to learn the songs assigned.

What are you most proud of about the chorus?

I am proud to be a member of a chorus that puts so much effort into bringing us all together to become one of the top choruses in Australia.

How different might your life be now if you hadn’t joined the chorus?

Boring! I wouldn’t have anything – for me – to look forward to. It’s an exciting escape from the daily work/kids/family routine. I now have a new outlook in life that’s all about me & something I have grown to love!

What’s the funniest memory of being a Sweet Adeline?

Being told I need to wear false eyelashes & unable to put them on – very difficult!

Who do you admire in Sweet Adelines?

All NBC section leaders & musical leadership members. The energy, commitment & knowledge they convey is admirable & encouraging.

What is your favourite song you have sung?

Out of the 6 songs I learnt, Girl on Fire was my personal favourite because it is a song I know & I enjoyed singing it as a bass.

Learning the art of stage makeup, including eyelashes!
