Sharon Cartwright elected to the Sweet Adelines International Board of Directors

Currently serving a board-appointed one year term on the Sweet Adelines International Board of Directors (IBOD), Sharon Cartwright has been elected by members world-wide to a three-year term from May 1 2018 to April 30 2021. Sharon sings in our Bass section and is the Bass of five-time regional medallists Sista! Quartet. She served as the Team Coordinator on the Regional Management Team here in Australia until her appointment began and is a former Team Coordinator of Northern Beaches Chorus. We’re proud to be part of Sweet Adelines history as Sharon is the first from Australia to serve as a member of the IBOD.

We are also thrilled that last year Mary Rhea, Music Director of Oklahoma City Chorus and regular NBC coach was elected for a three year term. Congratulations Sharon and Mary!

A new sister Chorus!

We’ve long enjoyed a sister-chorus relationship with Coastal a Cappella as both are directed by Linda Wareham.

In 2017, we added another sibling after Assistant Director, Trish Tuffin was appointed Music Director of Aurora Australis Chorus of Sydney. Congratulations Trish!

Adding a Filipino voice to the Chorus

Baritone and dynamic front row performer Mae Atendido was recently interviewed on SBS Radio about her experience as the only Filipina in Northern Beaches Chorus. This is something Mae would love to change and she aims to inspire other Filipinos to join choirs.

The family environment of NBC and deep love of singing shared amongst all members instantly made her feel part of the community. Listen to the interview (Filipino).

Sydney Eisteddfod results

NBC placed second in the Show Choir contest of the Sydney Eisteddfod on May 27 at the Concourse Theatre, Chatswood. We received a Highly Commended certificate in the Community Choir event on the same evening. Congratulations to our Sweet Adelines friends Endeavour Harmony Chorus for winning both of these events! Full results here.

Congratulations to Sista! and Treble Makers Quartets

Sista! Quartet again took a 5th place medal at the regional Sweet Adelines International contest, in Perth WA. In their seventh contest appearance, performing Zing! Went The Strings of My Heart and If I Give My Heart To You, they took to the stage in black sequinned knee-length dresses with multi-coloured bling necklace and sassy ruffle petticoats in purple, red, green and blue. Congratulations Linda, Clare, Sharon C & Sharon S for your fifth regional contest medal!

Treble Makers Quartet, in their new line up with quartet contest novices Ashley and Ainslie, achieved their highest score from six contest appearances to date and placed 11th. Singing Fit As A Fiddle and Bandstand In Central Park, they dazzled the audience in elegant floor length black gowns with mesh bodice featuring midnight blue embellishments.

Congratulations also to Stella Baihn and Glen Hancock, two NBC members who dual with 1st place-getters Endeavour Harmony Chorus in the Chorus contest. They have earned the right to compete in St. Louis, Missouri in the 2018 Sweet Adelines International contest.

Five NBC singers sang with our sister chorus, Coastal a Cappella in the Chorus contest – Mae, Sharon, Gaye, Lynne and Wilma joined for the experience, along with regular dual members Val and Trish. Both NBC and CaC are directed by Linda Wareham.

Proud supporters of the Sydney Eisteddfod

We’ve been enthusiastic competitors in the Eisteddfod for many years. This year, we’ve taken it one step further with an in-kind sponsorship! Singers in the Choirs events being held at The Concourse Theatre, Chatswood on 28 & 29 May stood on the choral risers we have loaned them. In return, our advertisement featured in the Eisteddfod program. We will give an in-kind sponsorship again in 2017.

We are proud that one of our ensembles ’11 Decibelles’ took First Place in the brand new Small Vocal Groups event and the Chorus was a finalist in The John Lamble Foundation Australasian Open Choral Championships held at Sydney Grammar School at 6pm on June 19.
