How long have you been a member of NBC and Sweet Adelines? How did you come to join?

I joined the chorus in 2001. Wow that seems a long time ago. How the time has flown! I was singing in the church choir with mainly the youth group who had an infectious way about their singing and their life that I thought I might like to sing on a regular basis and a variety of songs, apart from the hymns, that when I saw an ad in the Manly Daily and a picture of these smiling ladies, I decided to go along to the intro night. That was the start of something I didn’t even know anything about-barbershop singing.

What were you doing 20 years ago when the chorus began?

Twenty years ago I was working in a bank, from teller to bank manager, and also looking after a family of four children and a husband.

What do you most enjoy about the chorus?

Singing provides me with a “high”. I have the opportunity to improve my singing and it has given me a whole new group of friends.

What have you done in Sweet Adelines that has taken you out of your comfort zone?

I love singing in a chorus, whether it’s a large group or small group, but singing in a quartet does take me out of my comfort zone.

What have you done in the chorus that has surprised your family and friends?

My family and friends are impressed that I am still involved with the chorus. My friends especially enjoy the performances and are blown away with the standard of performance which, each year gets better. They are also surprised that not only do we sing but we put on a Show. They love our costumes, makeup and entertainment.

What are you most proud of about the chorus?

The camaraderie in our chorus is special. Our director Linda and our management team are always looking to promote our chorus and Sweet Adelines barbershop singing. We regularly receive extra coaching of a high standard. We are encouraged to aim high and achieve. The chorus competes in external competition e.g. Eisteddfods and we always hold our own, knowing others enjoy our style of singing.

How different might your life be now if you hadn’t joined the chorus?

Monday nights probably would be a bit mundane- dinner, washing up, ironing, catching a TV show …

Who do you admire in Sweet Adelines?

All the wonderful women of our chorus, who come out each Monday night to have fun, learn new songs and techniques. Our coaches and assistants who willingly share their knowledge and expertise. And of course, Sharon Cartwright who has been elected to the International Board of Directors of Sweet Adelines.

What is your favourite song you have sung?

I especially like the ballads – If I Give My Heart To You and most others. I also like singing some Australian songs like I’m Australia and Shelter.
